Put The Good Stuff In First

So we have made it to October, and now we are in the heat of the pumpkin spice coffee season!  Are you one of the people that can’t get enough of pumpkin spice coffee?  I don’t drink it too much because of the calories, but I admit I will buy a bottle of “International Delight”, or “Coffee Mate” pumpkin spice for an occasional fall weekend treat.  I love to make a fire in the fireplace on a Saturday morning and sit in front of it with a good cup of coffee.

My problem is that I always pour too much coffee in the cup, and I don’t leave enough room for the pumpkin spice.  When I put the flavoring in the cup, its too full and spills over the side…especially when I stir the flavor in.  What I have learned to do, is put the flavoring in the cup first.  It then mixes when the coffee is poured in and the cup doesn’t get over full.   Hmmmm….put the flavor….the good stuff….in first!

In our lives we often get so busy with the world.   There is no down time in the day, and no sanctity in the week for a day of rest anymore.  Our culture has turned into a 24/7 on the go society.  Work used to be a Monday to Friday nine to five thing…but no more.  Our lives are over-filled with lots of worldly activities.  Why is it that there is no room for Jesus in our lives?

When you think about it, time is a finite resource and it’s being stolen from you…constantly. Time theft is a subtle thing…and I believe it is something Satan uses against us.  Time theft comes in the form of polite and reasonable requests, of email CCs and FYIs, of commitments and obligations. If not caught early, succumbing to time stealing can become a dangerous habit for life.  Sadly you probably won’t realize it until you look back on your life and realize all the time wasted on stuff that was just NOT that important  The older I get, the more I see that my life would have been easier if I had spent more time with Jesus.  Jesus gives us fruits of the spirit, and how could you NOT want more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control in your life.  They are such good things!

Clearing your time of non-essentials is a hard thing.   We have to understand that ONLY JESUS will get you from where you are now to where you want to be.  If you don’t guard your time like it’s your most prized possession, it will be taken from you.  So what do we do?  With pumpkin spice flavor, you get enough in the cup by putting the flavor in first.  With Jesus, we need to do the same.  Put HIM in our lives first.  Put the good stuff in first!  Then we will be assured there is room for Him.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.  For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”  Col:3:2-4

“Seek first the Kingdom of God” !  It is good to be your pastor!
