{"id":3410,"date":"2025-12-01T00:00:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-01T05:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/churchintheacres.org\/wpDir\/?p=3410"},"modified":"2026-01-20T06:30:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T11:30:15","slug":"what-is-advent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchintheacres.org\/wpDir\/what-is-advent\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Advent?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Message from Pastor Chris<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:2,&quot;335551620&quot;:2}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Advent\u00a0is\u00a0a time of waiting.\u00a0\u00a0Waiting for Christ to come\u2026..first as the baby Jesus\u2026.now\u00a0as the returning King\u2026.but\u00a0what is our focus?\u00a0\u00a0On the wait?\u00a0\u00a0Or on the coming?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the longest time I figured Advent meant \u201cto wait.\u201d Waiting for Christmas to happen, waiting (as a kid) for Santa Claus, waiting for the Christmas tree to go up, waiting for all those presents I hoped to get (and hoping I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0too greedy).\u00a0Was\u00a0this the true meaning of Advent?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The dictionary defines advent as the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The root of the word Advent\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0\u201cto wait,\u201d\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0\u201cto come.\u201d And doesn\u2019t that make more sense, not just from\u00a0a logistics\u00a0standpoint but from a spiritual one?\u00a0\u00a0Advent is the celebration of the coming of Christ. Whether you open windows on an Advent calendar or light candles every evening or look at the Christmas decorations going up around town\u2014unspeakably\u00a0early\u00a0it seems to me\u2014you\u2019re\u00a0celebrating the upcoming arrival of a huge holiday.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tis the season, indeed, to be jolly. Why? Because\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0looking at not just one coming, one\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0already happened, but another that we wait for with great anticipation and joy, the Second Coming.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">God stepped down and came to the earth in the form of Jesus, the very Son of God, born to a humble couple from Nazareth, in even humbler circumstances\u2014as the gospel writer Luke showed us\u2014in a stable with a manger for a bed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have to wonder if\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0going to happen because we know it happened already from the accounts\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0read.\u00a0And we know that\u00a0Christ\u2019s return and the coming of the kingdom of God\u00a0is certain, because God always lives up to His promises.\u00a0\u00a0You can bet the house on that!\u00a0\u00a0The very\u00a0certainty\u00a0is\u00a0a gift\u00a0of hope to us.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cO come, o come, Emmanuel,\u201d we sing at Advent, all our yearning for that good news. And because Christ did come, our yearning is not empty or vain.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is the true meaning of Advent. Christ\u00a0came\u2026..and\u00a0is coming\u00a0again.
