{"id":2980,"date":"2024-12-01T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2024-12-01T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/churchintheacres.org\/wpDir\/?p=2980"},"modified":"2025-03-20T10:59:11","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T14:59:11","slug":"times-such-as-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/churchintheacres.org\/wpDir\/times-such-as-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Times Such as This\u2026\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I started to write this article for the December Connection newsletter, I had just wished my close friend Sharef a happy birthday\u2026.thanking God that Sharef was still alive amidst all the carnage in Gaza.\u00a0 Kind of hard to have a \u201chappy\u201d birthday when one is in a war zone. There is no peace there for sure\u2026<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I think of Jesus\u2019 birth.\u00a0 We have pictures in our minds of the peaceful manger scene.\u00a0 It even looks so serene in our yearly Christmas Eve pageant.\u00a0 The fact is, we know it was not peaceful.\u00a0 Giving birth is never peaceful.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, there is nothing peaceful and serene about the Holy Land this month, with violence in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon, and threats from Iran.\u00a0 Tens of thousands of innocent civilians are suffering.\u00a0 Our own government is deeply entangled in the conflict, and as much as we might want to distance ourselves from the violence, we can&#8217;t.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are meant to be joyous at Christmas, both culturally and theologically, glad tidings and great joy, for a child is born in Bethlehem, a Savior, and besides, there will be gifts and egg nog and Christmas trees and colorful lights and all manner of festivity. But if we read the scripture, after Jesus\u2019 birth, we soon read that portion of the gospel of Matthew in which King Herod the Great orders the slaughter of all the boys under two years old.\u00a0 We read the story of Mary and Joseph and Jesus fleeing as refugees, crossing the border into Egypt for the safety of their family.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Christmas is not less Christmas-y for us because times are scary. Our world is so very far from perfect, but we must remember that a perfect world would not need a Savior. The world has always been a hard place ever since Satan fell from Heaven to Earth and took over.\u00a0 Jesus, revolutionary son of God and teacher of radical love, was born in times that were very hard in their own ways.\u00a0 We must remember that God\u2019s timing is perfect, and because our lives are part of God\u2019s plan, we must remember that God has planned us to be alive at this time.\u00a0 We ALL have a part in God\u2019s plan.\u00a0 Do you know what your part is?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I am reminded of Esther 4:14 in the Bible:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201cFor if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father\u2019s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Esther was reluctant, but she trusted that God sovereignly put her in that position at that time to do what needed to be done. This tested her faith, and God was working all things for good in her situation.\u00a0 We are all here at this time according to God\u2019s plan.\u00a0 Let us remember that no matter what is going on in this world, or our own little corner of the world, that God calls us to spread the Gospel, and spread love.\u00a0 This Christmas, spread love.\u00a0 The world needs it and we need to do our part.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I love you all!\u00a0 Have a wonderful Christmas!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is good to be your pastor!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In The Lord\u2019s service till the last fish is caught, &lt;&gt;&lt;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pastor Chris<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I started to write this article for the December Connection newsletter, I had just wished my close friend Sharef a happy birthday\u2026.thanking God that Sharef was still alive amidst all the carnage in Gaza.\u00a0 Kind of hard to have a \u201chappy\u201d birthday when one is in a war zone.
